Attorney General’s Statement On Ruling In Brown & Brown
August 2, 2010
“The Connecticut Supreme Court reconfirmed the Office of the Attorney General’s broad power to investigate antitrust law violations. It no way limits our authority to subpoena documents and witnesses, and enforce compliance. It will impose some parameters on our ability to show or share documents with others outside the office.
“Our antitrust investigations have been vigorous and successful -- and we will continue to vigorously and successfully enforce antitrust laws, including our investigation into Brown & Brown.
“Our investigation of Brown & Brown will continue as part of our ongoing larger insurance investigation. Our insurance investigation has already uncovered and helped stop a culture of bid rigging, concealed contingent commissions and other anticompetitive practices, and has returned nearly a billion dollars to businesses, individuals and state taxpayers.
“I am reviewing the court’s decision -- which reversed two trial court rulings -- and will consider seeking legislative action to overrule its impact.”
