Attorney General George Jepsen and nine attorneys general from around the country are unhappy with the lack of communication from health insurer Anthem, Inc. to its customers about the massive data breach that may have exposed sensitive personal information of as many as 80 million people, or perhaps more, and are demanding that the company immediately step up its response.

In a letter sent to Anthem's president and chief executive officer today, the attorneys general said the Indiana-based company's delay in notifying those impacted is unreasonable and is causing unnecessary added concern to an already shaken population of Anthem customers.

"My office has been flooded with phone calls from concerned Connecticut residents who are frustrated with the lack of information from Anthem, and their feelings are completely justified," said Attorney General Jepsen. "Anthem started out well by publicly disclosing the breach relatively quickly, but its subsequent delay in providing information to affected individuals is flatly unacceptable."

Attorney General Jepsen continued, "Consumers are the innocent victims of this breach, and each day that goes by puts them at greater risk. In a meeting with my office last week, Anthem committed to providing two years of free credit monitoring and identity theft protection to all affected Connecticut residents. I appreciated that commitment, but the time to communicate real information about those protections to consumers is now. I will seek to hold Anthem responsible for any damage experienced by Connecticut residents as a result of delays in providing protections."

Joining Attorney General Jepsen on today's letter are the attorneys general of Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Mississippi, Nebraska, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.

Assistant Attorneys General Michele Lucan and Thomas Ryan, of the Attorney General’s Privacy Task Force, and Matthew Fitzsimmons, chair of the Task Force, are assisting the Attorney General with this matter.
