Plant Health Problems

This plant is relatively free of disease problems.

Insect Problems:

Aphids.
The waterlily aphid, Rophalosiphum nymphaeae, infests the leaves of waterlily. No control measures have been developed.

Waterlily leaf beetle, Galerucella nymphaeae.
This 1/4" dark brown beetle and other beetles feed upon the leaves and flowers of waterlily. No control measures have been developed.

Waterlily leafcutter, Synclita obliteralis.
The brown patterned moth lays eggs near the edges of leaves during the summer. Grubs are off-white with a dark line along their back and a small, light brown head. They first feed as miners but later make a protective case out of leaf pieces tied together with silk. This case is open at both ends and allows air in while keeping water out. Like bagworms they carry their case along with them as they feed on foliage.

Fish will feed on larvae. Temporarily flooding the pond will wash the cases and larvae into the pond where fish can have better access to the insects.
