Advisory Bulletin for AFFF Containing PFAS
Advisory Bulletin for AFFF Containing PFAS
The mission of fire departments is the preservation of life, property and protection of the environment. As many are aware, recent studies have indicated there is a health concern when people are exposed to Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS). As such, efforts are underway to address potential for exposure and contamination from the use of firefighting foam.
Attached please find an Advisory Bulletin issued jointly by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, Commission on Fire Prevention & Control regarding Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) containing Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS). Recommendations regarding the usage of foam at both emergency incidents and training are included. It is further advised that any time PFAS firefighting foam is used that CT DEEP Emergency Dispatch Center be notified at (860) 424-3338 to report the use as a release.
In the coming days, a survey of foam product fire departments have in their inventory will commence. In addition, departments will be asked to share where they may have conduced foam training in the past. Information gathered through the survey will be helpful as efforts are underway both within the state and federal governments to secure funds for the proper collection and disposal of foam containing PFAS as well as address any contamination that may have occurred. We request your participation in the survey.
