Definition

CERTIFIED INSURANCE CONSULTANT (LIFE, ACCIDENT & HEALTH or SICKNESS) – License to offer advice, counsel, opinion or service (for a fee) regarding Life, Accident & Health or Sickness insurance. License required using certain titles.

CERTIFIED INSURANCE CONSULTANT (PROPERTY & CASUALTY) – License to offer advice, counsel, opinion or service (for a fee) regarding P&C insurance. License required to use certain titles.

Fees

Initial: $300.00
Amendment: $300.00
Reinstatement: $300.00
Renewal: $250.00
No pro-rating, non-refundable $50.00 application fee.

Duration

Two (2) years – Renews September 30th every ODD year.

How to Apply

Residents:

  • There is no pre-licensing course required before taking the CIC exam.
  • To download the Candidate Handbook and schedule the exam.
  • After passing the exam, please allow 1-2 business days to submit your application to the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Under Licensing Center, select “Apply for a New License.”
    (Note: you do not need to submit the passed examination, the Department will verify this information with our vendor.)

Apply by going to National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Under Licensing Center, select “Add Line of Authority.”

How to Reinstate a License

After September 30th each ODD year, reinstate the license by going to the National Insurance Producer Registry (NIPR). Under Licensing Center, select “Apply for a New License.”

Initial Education Requirements

No pre-licensing required.

Waivers due to Designations

The examination requirement is waived for the following Certified Insurance Consultant license applicants:

  • For Life, Accident & Health or Sickness License: Any applicant who has been awarded the professional designation of CLU and provides a current Letter of Designation.
  • For Property & Casualty License: Any applicant who has been awarded the professional designation of CPCU, AAI, or CIC and provides a current Letter of Designation.

Email the current Letter of Designation (within 90 days of issuance) to the Department, send the email to cid.licensing@ct.gov, Attn: CIC Examination Exemptions. The Department will then email you the paper application, as you will not be able to submit the application through NIPR

Renewal Continuing Education (CE) Requirements (C.G.S 38a-465a(p))

Connecticut does not require CE for any CIC.
