James Maharg Convicted of the 2019 Murder of Thomas Conley in Sherman

11/18/2022

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Danbury, CT) – Danbury State’s Attorney David R. Applegate announced that a three-judge panel in Danbury Superior Court today found James Maharg, age 69, guilty of the crimes of Murder in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-54a, and Tampering with Physical Evidence in violation of Connecticut General Statutes § 53a-155. The members of the panel included the Honorable Robin Pavia, the Honorable Tracy Lee Dayton and the Honorable Maximino Medina Jr.

Maharg’s conviction stems from the death of Thomas Conley, age 63, which occurred in the early morning hours of March 19, 2019 in the couple’s home in Sherman. According to evidence introduced at the trial, Maharg reported to police that the victim had fallen down the stairs, but after an investigation, it was determined that the scene had been staged, and the real cause of death was four strikes to the victim’s head from a heavy, cutting object.

The case was investigated by the Western District Major Crime Squad of the Connecticut State Police and Inspector Donald Brown. Supervisory Assistant State’s Attorney Deborah P. Mabbett and Assistant State’s Attorney Mary-Caitlin Harding prosecuted the case.

Sentencing is scheduled for January 25, 2023 at Danbury Superior Court.
