Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES)
Connecticut has received a multi-year grant allowing all EMS agencies and sponsor hospitals free access to the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) program. CARES helps local EMS providers and communities learn more about the response to cardiac arrest and find room for improvement.
Agencies can enter cardiac arrest cases one at a time or using a direct ePCR transfer through a HIPAA compliant system. The participating EMS agency has access to all the EMS and hospital data for their patients. EMS agencies do not have access to data from other participating agencies. Hospital contacts only have access to their own data and can view, but not edit, the EMS dataset for patients transported to their facility. CARES staff and the state coordinator have access to all EMS and hospital data for monitoring and de-identification purposes.
Several large EMS agencies and hospital systems in Connecticut already participate in CARES, and now all agencies can join at no cost. Interested agency leaders may contact the CARES Program Specialist, Lance Timmons at 203-314-5847 or by email at Lance.Timmons@RedCross.org. The American Red Cross has partnered with CARES to support this grant program.
