Marital and Family Therapist Associate
An applicant for licensure as a marital and family therapist associate shall:
Have successfully completion of a graduate degree program specializing in marital and family therapy from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) or completion of a program meeting the requirements outlined in Section 20-195a-2 of the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies at a regionally accredited institution of higher education;
Submit verification from a supervising licensed marital and family therapist verifying that the applicant is working toward completing the postgraduate experience required for licensure as a marital and family therapist.
Documentation requirements:
An applicant for licensure must arrange for submission of the following documents directly to this office:
Official transcript of marital and family therapy degree program, forwarded directly to this office from the institution at which study was undertaken. If the applicant's graduate degree program was accredited by COAMFTE, no further educational documentation is required. If your degree program of studies was not COAMFTE accredited at the time of graduation, please request the Verification of Course of Study form to be submitted directly to this office;
Verification of completion of a 500 hour supervised practicum or internship submitted directly to this office by educational program director. Please select this link for the required form;
A completed Verification of Supervision form. Please complete the form with your supervisor and upload the completed form when prompted to on your online application.
A completed application with photograph attached. Applications are only accepted online. Please select this link to apply online. The application fee is $125.
There is a question on the application asking if the you would like to be approved to sit for the Examination in Marital and Family Therapy of the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards. If you would like to be approved to sit for the examination, please answer this question affirmatively. If you answer affirmatively, once all required documentation has been received you will be provided with information on how to register for the examination.

Renewal Information
A license issued to a marital and family therapist associate shall expire two years from the date it is issued and may be renewed online once for an additional twenty-four months. The renewal fee $220
Each licensed marital and family therapist associate applying for license renewal shall furnish evidence of working toward completing the postgraduate experience required for licensure as a marital and family and the potential for successful completion of such experience prior to the expiration of the twenty-four month renewal period. Renewal applications will be processed online. The licensee will receive a renewal notice email approximately 90 days prior to expiration and at least 1 additional notice approximately 30 days following expiration.
