Equivalent Residency Training

Pursuant to Section 20-10, Connecticut General Statutes, no person shall receive a license who has not successfully completed at least two years of progressive graduate medical training as a resident physician in a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) or an equivalent program approved by the Board with the consent of the Department.

Applicants who have not completed two years of progressive graduate medical training as a resident physician in an ACGME-accredited program but have other post-graduate experience may provide equivalent credentials as well as all other documentation required for licensure.

Pursuant to Section 20-10-5 of the Regulations of Connecticut State Agencies, certain qualifications are considered as providing the equivalency of the requisite residency training.
  • Current certification by a specialty board approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or admission for the certification examination by such board;
  • Current certification by a foreign specialty board accepted as meeting the education and training requirements for certification examination by a board approved by the ABMS; or
  • Successful completion, at a level greater than the second post graduate year, of one year of an ACGME accredited residency or fellowship training program.
Board certified applicants must arrange for the board to verify the certification directly to this office.

Applicants who have completed residency or fellowship training at a level greater than the second post graduate year should arrange for the submission of the verification of residency training form to be submitted directly to this office.

Applicants who do not satisfy this criteria may petition the Department for an individual review of their credentials.
