MALLOY APPOINTS EAST HARTFORD MAYOR MELODY CURREY TO LEAD DMV

(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor-Elect Dan Malloy today announced that he has tapped East Hartford Mayor Melody Currey to lead the Department of Motor Vehicles.

"I got to know Melody when she was in the House of Representatives, and I've admired her work as Mayor. She is exactly the type of person we need at the Department of Motor Vehicles," said Governor-Elect Malloy. "She's smart, innovative, and she's always made a point to seek out new ways to serve the people she represents more efficiently and effectively. I know that the town of East Hartford will be sad to see her leave the mayor's office, but I know she'll be a fantastic addition to the Department of Motor Vehicles."

"We've all been to the DMV, and more than likely, we've all left the DMV with some ideas about the ways in which it could be made more efficient," said Mayor Currey. "These are exactly the ideas I want to hear.

Governor-Elect Malloy has put a premium on reducing waste, duplication, and trimming our spending wherever possible. The DMV is a prime place to find those savings and I look forward to working with the staff there to get our ideas together."

Mayor Currey was elected as East Hartford's mayor in 2005. In that role, she managed a budget in excess of $155 million, while downsizing town government without a loss of services. To make East Hartford Town Hall more accessible, Mayor Currey established an alternative work schedule, agreed to by the municipal unions, and at no cost to the taxpayer, keeping town hall open to residents and businesses one evening per week. Mayor Currey serves as the Vice President of the Connecticut Coalition for Justice in Education Funding, the President of the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, and as the Chairperson of the Capitol Region Council of Governments.

Prior to her time as mayor, Currey served as the State Representative from the 10th Assembly District from 1993 through 2005. As a State Representative, she served as both a Deputy Majority Leader and a Deputy Speaker, and served on the Education, Appropriations, Legislative Management and Insurance Committees, among others. Mayor Currey has been involved in neighborhood revitalization projects, the East Hartford Lion's Club, the Girl Scouts and the Science Center of Connecticut Leadership Council. Mayor Currey is married to Donald and they have four children and three grandchildren, all of whom live in East Hartford.
