GOV. MALLOY: BARKHAMSTED AND THOMASTON RECEIVE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT GRANTS

STEAP Funds Allocated for Town Infrastructure Projects That Protect Public Safety

(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that Barkhamsted and Thomaston will receive Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) emergency management funds for infrastructure projects that will help protect public safety during storms and other emergencies.

"These grants provide important support for Barkhamsted and Thomaston-two of the many Connecticut towns that are actively working to ensure that their emergency response and recovery efforts are expedient and effective," said Governor Malloy. "Storm preparedness is a priority-from holding utility companies to a higher standard to better coordinating statewide response efforts and communications. These emergency management projects will help keep residents safe."

Barkhamsted was awarded $230,000 in STEAP funds to replace two emergency generators-one at the town's designated emergency shelter, Barkhamsted School, and the other at the Barkhamsted Highway Garage, which serves as the town's Emergency Operations Center.

"I am pleased that Barkhamsted was awarded this funding to replace two emergency generators," said State Senator Kevin Witkos (R-Barkhamsted). "This smart investment is an example of the proper use of government funds that will help prepare our community for future storm response and emergency preparedness."

Thomaston was awarded $500,000 in STEAP funds for the design and construction of a public safety communication system for Police, Fire, Ambulance, Public Works, and the Water Pollution Control Authority. Thomaston currently relies on a 34 year old, low band, two-way radio communication system. Radio failure, poor coverage, and audio problems are common occurrences.

"The current radio system is aging and badly in need of modernization," said State Senator Rob Kane (R-Thomaston). "This funding will help defray the cost of installing an upgraded town-wide communication system and ensure that the town can react rapidly in a time of emergency. We are thankful for this state funding."

The State Bond Commission allocated $10 million for 2013 STEAP grants in October 2012. Grants are awarded to small towns across the state in part due to their impact on overall regional economic development.
