GOV. MALLOY: POMFRET AND HAMPTON RECEIVE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT GRANTS

STEAP Funds Allocated for Town Infrastructure Projects to Bolster Public Safety

(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that Pomfret and Hampton will receive Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) emergency management funds for projects that will help protect the public during storms and other emergencies.

"State government, working with Connecticut cities and towns, is an important partner in the effort to keep residents safe and informed during emergency events," said Governor Malloy. "Investing in these projects in Pomfret and Hampton allow the towns to respond more expediently to dangerous situations-and better protect public safety."

Pomfret was awarded $500,000 in STEAP funds to design and construct an extension to the Emergency Response Center and Firehouse. This project will create additional space for Ambulance Service, Town Constables, EOC, and Response Offices.

"Several years ago I received a full tour of Pomfret's Fire Department; the facility has been extremely well-maintained over the years, but sorely lacks the space that the town needs for a full emergency response center," said State Representative Mike Alberts (R-Woodstock). "I appreciate the Governor's support of this very worthwhile project."

"We are very pleased that Pomfret has received additional STEAP funding to construct a much needed emergency services facility," said Jim Rivers, First Selectman of Pomfret. "The storms of last year emphasized the importance of having adequate emergency response facilities. Governor Malloy's decision to fund this project is evidence of his strong support for the services our local volunteers perform during town emergencies. The Town of Pomfret is extremely grateful for Governor Malloy's support."

Hampton was awarded $100,000 in STEAP funds to purchase and install a generator for the Town's Emergency Operations Center. Hampton has no auxiliary-powered EOC and uses the elementary school as their designated shelter.

"The purchase and installation of a generator for emergency response purposes in Hampton is much-needed in this rural community," said State Representative Mike Alberts (R-Woodstock). "Hampton was hit hard in last year's storms; I know the community will appreciate the Governor's recognition of the town's need."

"The Town of Hampton is pleased that OPM has awarded our funding request," said Allan Cahill, First Selectman of Hampton. "This FY 2013 STEAP grant will install auxiliary-power to Hampton's municipal campus. Now essential town services and Emergency Operations Center can operate from the Town Hall, and allow our Community Center to provide additional shelter to cope with power-outage events."

The State Bond Commission allocated $10 million for 2013 STEAP grants in October 2012. Grants are awarded to small towns across the state in part due to their impact on overall regional economic development.
