GOV. MALLOY: STATE TO CREATE UNIFIED FRONT TO PROTECT SENIORS
Signs Executive Order Directing Agency Collaboration to Prevent Elder Abuse
(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that he has ordered relevant state agencies to support efforts by the State Department on Aging (SDA) that seek to prevent the abuse of elderly citizens. His announcement follows yesterday's convening of the Connecticut Elder Justice Coalition Coordinating Council. The Council was created to oversee Connecticut's Elder Justice Coalition, which links providers, advocates and stakeholders to valuable resources available in our state and which creates a unified front against intolerable abuse of our seniors.
"Ensuring that our seniors have access to the supportive services they need to live with dignity, security, and independence is an important part of how we can improve the overall quality of life in our state," said Governor Malloy, who established the State Department on Aging in 2013. "Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, sexual and psychological abuse, as well as neglect and financial exploitation. The Coordinating Council will support the critical missions of the Aging Department and the Elder Justice Coalition. With everyone working together, we will improve the lives of seniors."
Governor Malloy's
Executive Order No. 42
directs the Department of Banking, Department of Consumer Protection, Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection, the State Department on Aging and the Department of Social Services to offer staff and other administrative support to the Connecticut Elder Justice Coalition Coordinating Council, and to:

Seek input and assistance from relevant private entities to prevent elder abuse.

Identify ways to increase public awareness, reporting and social network support of elder abuse victims.

Consider ways to improve programs for elder abuse victims.

Identify best practices in elder abuse prevention, detection and intervention.

Recommend legislative or other governmental action that can be taken to prevent elder abuse.
"Through this increased statewide collaboration and development of solutions to elder justice issues, we can significantly enhance the quality of life for present and future generations of older adults," said state Department on Aging Acting Commissioner Margaret Gerundo-Murkette.
The Connecticut Elder Justice Coalition's Coordinating Council is made up of individuals representing approximately 16 organizations appointed by the Commissioner of the Department on Aging.
