Gov. Malloy Announces Dr. Raul Pino to Serve as Acting Commissioner of Public Health

(HARTFORD, CT) - Governor Dannel P. Malloy today announced that Dr. Raul Pino, who currently serves as Deputy Commissioner of the Department of Public Health (DPH), will serve as Acting Commissioner beginning Monday, December 21, while the Governor conducts a search for a permanent Commissioner to replace Dr. Jewel Mullen.  As was announced last month, Dr. Mullen has taken a new position with the federal Department of Health and Human Services.

"I want to thank Dr. Mullen for her service to our state over the last five years, ensuring that the department worked with communities across Connecticut to make our state healthier.  Dr. Mullen has done a fine job and we are sorry to see her depart," Governor Malloy said.  "Dr. Pino is very well respected within Connecticut's public health community, and I want to thank him for taking on this responsibility."

Prior to serving as Deputy Commissioner of DPH, Dr. Pino served as Director of the City of Hartford Department of Health and Human Services, where he managed the department's budget and oversaw labor relations, public health preparedness, code enforcement, and the department's management team.  And prior to that, he served as an epidemiologist for DPH's STD Unit and worked at the Institute for Community Research, Hispanic Health Council, and Hartford Hospital.  He is a member of the American Public Health Association and National Hispanic Science Network on Drug Abuse.  He graduated from the University of Havana with a Doctorate in Medicine, and from the UConn School of Medicine with an MA in Public Health.

Governor Malloy intends to announce a successor to serve as Public Health Commissioner in the new year.
