Gov. Malloy: U.S. News & World Report Ranks Connecticut Among Top in 'Best States' Report
Rankings Recognize Connecticut’s Education System and Public Safety Statistics Among its Leading Key Metrics
(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman are highlighting the release of a report today by U.S. News & World Report, which ranked Connecticut among the top states in the country after an analysis was conducted combining more than 10,000 data points across a range of observable outcomes in several important categories, including education, health care, government, infrastructure, economy, opportunity, and crime and corrections. The “Best States” report gave Connecticut an overall ranking of 12, with its leading categories including No. 2 for gender equality, No. 3 for educational attainment, No. 3 for college readiness, and No. 3 for state integrity. It also ranked Connecticut as the seventh safest state in the country.
“Connecticut is a great place to put down roots, raise a family, and grow a business – but our government must always be working to make it even better,” Governor Malloy said. “Our state residents should be particularly proud that their home state is a leader when it comes to gender equality and education, and home to some of the most educated and skilled workforces in the country. We have much more work ahead, but there is no denying the real progress taking place already.”
“I’m pleased that Connecticut has been recognized as a top state by the very residents who live and work here,” Lt. Governor Wyman said. “Being ranked second in gender equality is especially relevant since it is directly related to the overall health and well-being of our families, our economy, and the strength of our communities. We have more work to do, but this is a strong indicator that we are on the right track.”
U.S. News evaluated states across 68 metrics to create the Best States rankings. The rankings are based on tens of thousands of data points provided by McKinsey & Company’s Leading States Index. In calculating the rankings, categories were weighted based on a national “citizen experience” survey, conducted by McKinsey, that asked people to prioritize each subject in their state and provide their levels of satisfaction with government services. More information about the methodology can be found here.
