Gov. Malloy Statement on Committee Passage of Bill to Help Stabilize Transportation Funding

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy released the following statement regarding the Transportation Committee’s approval of legislation this afternoon that will help stabilize the state’s transportation funding in the long-term. It now moves to the Finance Committee for its consideration.

“This is a positive step forward as we work to ensure the long-term stability of the Special Transportation Fund. Let’s be clear: Without new revenue, we will be forced to delay or cancel billions of dollars of projects in every town in Connecticut – these projects aren’t optional, they are critical to ensuring our roads, bridges, tunnels, and rails remain in a state of good repair. In addition, we will be forced to once again increase fares and reduce services on MetroNorth, Shore Line East, and CTtransit. While our neighboring states have made significant transportation investments, Connecticut has fallen short, and it has harmed our economy. If we want to compete for jobs and economic development, we must revitalize our transportation system. I thank the leadership of the Transportation Committee for moving this important proposal forward.”

Noting that it will take several years for electronic tolling to come on-line in Connecticut, the Governor also reiterated his call for a short-term Special Transportation Fund (STF) fix.

“In addition to this bill, I have recommended a package of proposals to ensure the STF’s solvency in the short-term. It is essential that the legislature act quickly to move these or similar initiatives forward to prevent our infrastructure from falling further into a state of disrepair.”
