Gov. Malloy Statement on the One-Year Anniversary of Hurricane Maria

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Dannel P. Malloy released the following statement on the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria:

“Over the last year, the federal government’s response to the devastation of Hurricane Maria has been historically slow, leaving the lives of thousands of Americans uprooted and displaced. As a result, over 200,000 people with nowhere else to turn left for the mainland, including many who are now living in Connecticut, and we have welcomed them as they rebuild their homes and their lives. Residents in Puerto Rico continue to have limited access to clean water, food, and medicine. Whether the Trump administration wants to admit it or not, a couple rolls of paper towels is not enough to rebuild from one of the most devastating storms in our nation’s history. And the president’s outrageous lies only serve to marginalize the plight of those affected. One year later, we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost by this storm and in the ensuing months as a direct result, and we must commit ourselves as Americans to help our fellow citizens rebuild and recover from Hurricane Maria.”
