Department of Administrative Services Provides Update on Pump Station Incident

8/31/2021

(August 30, 2021) Department of Administrative Services Property & Facilities Manager, Doug Moore, released the following statement to provide an update on the incident at the Hartford pump station affecting state buildings:

“On Sunday morning, a serious incident occurred in the pump station (located at 474 Capitol Avenue) that affected our Capital Area System (CAS). The pump station provides heating and cooling services to several buildings in the Capitol District.

The Pump House is used to distribute steam and chilled water received from the Capitol District Energy Center Cogeneration Associates (CDECCA) Energy Plant located at 490 Capital Avenue to the state and privately owned buildings and facilities connected to the heating and cooling loop.

Department of Administrative Services (DAS) Facilities management notified building management, staff, and tenants on Sunday. DAS is working to restore services to these buildings as quickly as possible in the coming days using alternative systems. Cooling services have been restored to 101 Lafayette Street (Criminal Courthouse) utilizing an old but still functional chiller located within the building.

The explosion was limited to the CAS Pump House. Currently, the cause of the incident remains under investigation by the Connecticut State Police. More details about the cause of the incident and subsequent required improvements will be shared as they become available.

I am grateful to report that there were no injuries as a result of this accident, and I want to thank the State Police, Hartford Police Department and the Hartford Fire Department for their support and assistance."
