CT State Marshal Commission Seeks Qualified Applicants

11/16/2021

The Connecticut State Marshal Commission is accepting applications from members of the public who would like to be appointed to fill vacant state marshal positions in each of Connecticut’s eight counties.  Successful applicants will be appointed as members of the 2022 state marshal class.

“On behalf of the State Marshal Commission, we are excited to extend this opportunity for qualified members of the public to apply for appointment as a Connecticut State Marshal. State marshals are an integral part of Connecticut's legal system, and they play a key role in the judicial process. We look forward to appointing state marshals from the class of 2022 in each of the state's eight counties,” said Commissioner Shirley Skyers-Thomas, Esq., Acting Chairperson.

Connecticut State Marshals are self-employed independent contractors who perform critical duties in support of the legal system.  Among their many duties, state marshals serve civil process; enforce judgment collections and executions; perform courthouse ex-parte restraining order duty; make capias arrests, and effectuate summary process evictions and ejectments.

Applicants must be:

  • Age 21 by December 31, 2021

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED

  • Speak, read and write the English language

  • Hold a valid Connecticut driver license

  • Be an elector in the county of appointment

  • Pass an examination

  • Complete unpaid training classes and field training.

State marshals cannot be state employees, cannot be a justice of the peace, and cannot act or appear as an attorney in court.  Applicants are subject to financial and criminal background checks and must undergo a formal interview process.

Connecticut state marshals are eligible for the same health insurance policies as state employees, however, a state marshal must pay for the full cost of coverage.

The deadline to submit an application to the State Marshal Commission is December 31, 2021.

Additional information can be found on the Connecticut State Marshal Commission’s website:
