Description of Unit
The unit “Operations and Algebraic Thinking - Patterns in Addition and Multiplication” from the Georgia DOE focuses on both operations and geometry. The unit includes an Overview, Standards, Enduring Understandings and Essential Questions, Concepts and Skills to Maintain, Selected Terms and Symbols, Strategies for Teaching and Learning, and Evidence of Learning. The unit includes 15 Math performance tasks including pre-assessment, formative and a culmination (summative) performance task.
Cautions
Connecticut teachers should be aware that the unit is considered a high quality resource if taught with the following suggestions:
- Mathematical Practice Standards are not explicitly addressed in lessons.
- Pacing of unit (number of instructional days) is not explicitly stated.
- Guidance for differentiation and extensions are included (particularly, accommodations for assessment) however teachers will have to develop differentiated instruction at the lesson level for English language learners, students with disabilities, struggling students, and high achievers.
Rationale for Selection
The unit centers on the major work/ concepts of the grade. The unit includes discourse, which builds mental math capabilities and reasoning skills and lesson-embedded performance tasks. Extensive lesson resources and activities are included. General strategies for instruction of English language learners and students with disabilities are included.
