Secretary Merrill Marks National Voter Registration Day with Record Number of New Voters Registered Online, at DMV

More than 200,000 new voters have registered via Automatic Voter Registration at the DMV since 2016                                                                     More than 250,000 new voters have registered via Online Voter Registration since 2012

HARTFORD – On National Voter Registration Day, Secretary of the State Denise Merrill announced that Connecticut has registered more than 250,000 new voters via Online Voter Registration since she instituted the system in 2012. Connecticut has also registered more than 200,000 new voters via Automatic Voter Registration with the Department of Motor Vehicles since she instituted the system in 2016. Combined with Election Day Registration (which registered more than 20,000 new voters on Election Day in 2016), Online and Automatic Voter Registration have made registering to vote in Connecticut easier than ever before.

“Connecticut has become one of the best states in terms of ease of registering to vote, but I won’t rest until every eligible voter can register and every registered voter votes,” said Secretary of the State Denise Merrill. “Online Voter Registration and Automatic Voter Registration through the DMV, along with Election Day Registration, give Connecticut voters options as to when, where, and how they can register. Today, on National Voter Registration Day, make sure you are registered to vote, if you are not, please register, and make a plan to vote on Election Day!”

With studies showing that early engagement in community civic life is more likely to translate into lifetime engagement, and recent news articles about the increase in registration among younger voters, Secretary Merrill and the Secretary of the State’s office have made it a special emphasis to register 18-24 year olds. Secretary Merrill has also partnered with community organizations to welcome Puerto Rican families who have resettled in Connecticut following last year’s devastating Hurricanes Irma and Maria in order to ensure that just because they may have lost their homes, they do not lose their right to vote. Secretary Merrill has also partnered with Foodshare, Connecticut’s regional foodbank serving Hartford and Tolland counties, to reach underserved communities and register eligible voters at Foodshare events.
