Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman

Nancy Wyman was a leading voice for taxpayers during her 16 years as State Comptroller, and as Lt. Governor she will continue her commitment to fiscal responsibility and accountability. 

Connecticut faces enormous economic challenges that will require government to respond with unprecedented decisiveness and creativity. Nancy and Governor Dannel Malloy are committed to an agenda that will help Connecticut recover from the downturn and lay a foundation for long-term stability and prosperity. 

As Comptroller, Nancy brought openness and common sense to the budgeting process. She implemented stricter accounting of state finances and fought to increase the balance in the Rainy Day Fund as protection against tax increases. Nancy also has overseen the complete modernization of the computer system that runs the state’s core financial operations - greatly increasing the ability to track government spending. 

Nancy’s other major priority is to improve the quality of health care in Connecticut while keeping costs down. As Comptroller, her recommendation evolved into the landmark HUSKY health insurance plan that covers more than 300,000 children and their families. 

Prior to her election as State Comptroller, Nancy served as State Representative (1987-1995) from the 53rd District. She was House Chairperson of the Education Committee and Chairperson of the Appropriations Subcommittee on Elementary and Secondary Education. 

While a legislator, Nancy was noted for her work in the area of public education and was named “Legislator of the Year” by the Connecticut Education Association. From 1979-1987, she served on the Tolland Board of Education and was Vice-Chairperson for four of those years. 

Nancy has received countless awards for her work as Comptroller, including recognition of her leadership from the:

• Connecticut Federation of Business & Professional Women
• Council of Small Towns
• Connecticut Coalition of Police & Corrections Officers

In 2007, Nancy sought private donations to create the Wall of Honor tribute and annual memorial ceremony in the State Capitol to the Connecticut men and women in the U.S Armed Forces who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

Nancy also has been involved for years in events seeking to raise funds for breast cancer research, and as spokeswoman for the Mothers Against Drunk Driving Red Ribbon holiday campaign. She has served as Chairwoman of the American Heart Association’s Greater Hartford Heart Walk, and of the National Kidney Foundation of Connecticut’s annual gala. 

Nancy knows the challenges facing Connecticut’s families today because of her own experience. Growing up, she watched her father work three jobs and her Mom do typing work at night to make ends meet. Nancy’s first job was as an X-Ray Technician, and she and her husband Michael raised two daughters and now play active roles in the lives of their five grandchildren. 

Since 1973, Nancy and Michael have lived in Tolland, where they remain along with their two daughters and their husbands: Stacey and Steve Papa and Meryl and Bill Baldwin, and grandchildren: Kyle, Taylor, Lindsey, Max and Sydney.
