LT. Gov. Wyman, Dept. of Social Services, Access Health CT Commemorate 7th Anniversary of Affordable Care Act
(HARTFORD, Conn.) – Today, Lieutenant Governor Nancy Wyman, Chair of Access Health CT (AHCT), Department of Social Services Commissioner Roderick Bremby, and Access Health CT CEO Jim Wadleigh released statements in advance of the seventh anniversary of the federal Affordable Care Act (ACA), which is tomorrow, March 23, 2017. In Connecticut, the ACA is credited with reducing the state’s uninsured rate by half to 3.8 percent, among the lowest in the nation. It has also spurred other major reform initiatives currently underway to improve the healthcare system and control costs.
Lt. Governor Wyman said, “The ACA is a significant benefit for 724,000 residents across Connecticut who now have health coverage—and for all healthcare consumers who aren’t seeing costs rise as quickly as they were prior to the ACA. It also drives other healthcare reform initiatives that will improve the quality of care, address healthcare inequities, and contain costs. We should continue to make improvements to the ACA to ensure access to affordable, high-quality healthcare for everyone.”
Commissioner Bremby said, "As the first state to expand quality health coverage through Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act, Connecticut can be especially proud of how this historic legislation has made a tremendous difference in the health and economic security of our lower-income citizens. Currently, some 217,000 are enrolled in Medicaid expansion in our state, and this is just part of the landmark advances represented by the ACA—including the right to access to coverage regardless of pre-existing health conditions. It is absolutely critical that this progress be recognized and built on, for the well-being of Americans in all states and at all economic levels."
CEO Wadleigh said, “I couldn’t be prouder of the work our team has done at Access Health CT at implementing the ACA. These successes are because of the leadership of Governor Malloy and Lt. Governor Wyman, our committed Board of Directors, and the team of dedicated individuals that come to work every day. From day one, we have focused on doing whatever we can to help the residents of the state have access to quality healthcare coverage, many for the first time in their lives. Our priority has been, and will continue to be, our customers.”
