This program is for qualified permanent Connecticut residents who need special equipment to drive a motor vehicle. There is no charge for this training. You may be qualified for the Driver Training Program (DTP) if you:

  • Are a permanent Connecticut resident
  • Have a physical disability and need special equipment to drive a motor vehicle
  • Have medical clearance from the DMV Driver Services Division
  • Have a valid license or, if you are a new driver, have a valid Learner’s Permit
  • Meet the DMV requirements including identification, residency, vision screening, knowledge testing, and driver education
  • Can transfer from your wheelchair (if you use one) to the driver’s seat of the DTP training vehicle by yourself.  We can also train you in your wheelchair-accessible, special vehicle. All training vehicles must be registered, insured, and have an instructor's brake.

To get driver training on a modified vehicle, contact the DMV Driver Services Division. You will need to obtain a medical clearance. You must provide info about your disability. This will help the DMV decide which medical forms to send you. Your doctor(s) will complete it and return it. You can also download the forms.
