Overview
The Special Hazards Unit enforces the Fire Prevention Code and renders decisions on variations and exemptions or approved equivalent or alternative compliance.
The Special Hazards Unit serves as the "Authority Having Jurisdiction" for the purpose of interpretation, application, administration, and product and systems approvals for the code.
As the "Authority Having Jurisdiction", the Special Hazards Unit provides assistance to local and state code enforcement officials, other state agencies, building owners, private industry, design professionals, construction representatives and public safety officials with respect to application or interpretation of said regulations.
The Special Hazards Unit develops and administers training programs associated with the Fire Prevention Code, Hazardous Chemicals for the Division of Construction Services, and career development of local fire officials through the Office of Education and Data Management.
