How to Become a CARE Instructor

The CARE program relies heavily on volunteer Instructors to accomplish our goal of creating as many knowledgeable, environmentally conscious fishermen and women as possible! Since 1986, over 750 citizens have been certified as CARE fishing Instructors and gone on to teach introductory level fishing classes around the state. Our corps of volunteer Instructors are involved with teaching thousands students each year through a variety of classes and events.

CARE Instructors are stewards of our environment who enjoy sharing their knowledge and love of fishing almost as much as their students enjoy learning. We are always seeking new Instructors to join our volunteer ranks. If you enjoy the outdoors and are interested in helping create the next generation of anglers, please consider joining the CARE family as a volunteer fishing Instructor!

The process to become a Certified CARE instructor involves the following steps:

  1. Call the CARE Center at 860-663-1656 and speak with Tom Bourret or Justin Wiggins (CARE coordinators)
  2. Complete and submit a CARE Instructor Application
  3. Pass a State Police background check
  4. Take the New Instructor Training Certification class (offered each winter and summer)
  5. Start teaching “Introduction to Fishing Courses” in your hometown!

Once certified you will be encouraged and supported by CARE staff and your fellow CARE instructors as you teach classes to members of your community through Parks & Rec. Departments, local libraries, scout troops, and youth organizations. CARE Instructors are often referred to as “local fishing experts”!
