The Sustainable Materials Management program at DEEP is committed to providing technical assistance and support to municipalities and regions on reducing waste and saving money.  These efforts support Connecticut’s 2006 Solid Waste Management Plan which establishes a statewide goal of reaching 60% diversion from disposal by 2024 and identifies priority strategies to provide technical assistance and incentives to municipalities.

Grants

The SMART Grants program offers funding to municipalities and regional organizations actively engaged in reducing solid waste through SMART programs.  The grant program is ongoing and will be awarded on a first-come first-serve basis for as long as funding is available.

Ongoing Technical Assistance

Technical assistance available to municipalities and regions includes providing resources and best practices on waste reduction and reducing solid waste costs, meeting with and/or presenting to town or city councils or recycling committees, working with municipal finance staff to identify solid waste cost savings, providing resources to schools and municipalities on contracting for services, and providing individualized assistance on resource management contracting.  DEEP staff can also work with your municipality on best practices for municipal collection, contracted collection, subscription collection or drop-off centers.
