All Employment Services Terms & Definitions
The activities described below represent the types of activities that participants in the JFES program are typically enrolled in by their JFES case manager. The JFES case manager and the JFES program participant work together to determine which activity or combination of activities would be appropriate for that participant in order to help them achieve their career goals.

2-Year Degree Program
Pursuit of a 2-Year Degree at an institution for higher learning.
4-Year Degree Program
Pursuit of a 4-Year Degree at an institution for higher learning.
Employment Services | Terms & Definitions | A - E
Adult Basic Education
Education related to a specific occupation which requires basic skills in literacy and/or mathematics.
Barrier Intervention Services
Participation with a Case Manager in the Barrier Intervention Service Program while the participant is otherwise not involved with a JFES employment activity.
Community Service
Performing community service at a public or nonprofit organization that benefits the community.
English for Speakers of Other Languages
Education related to English communication.

General Equivalency Diploma GED
In the case of a participant who has not completed secondary school or received such a certificate, this means regular attendance, in accordance with the requirements of a secondary school or course of study, at a secondary school or in a course of study leading to a certificate of general equivalence.
High School Completion - Teen Parent
Regular attendance in high school for qualifying participants.
Job Development or Job Placement Services
Job search and job readiness assistance with a provider such as a Job Developer in order to directly serve, assess and enhance the skills of the participant seeking employment.
Job Search and Job Readiness
The act of seeking or obtaining employment, or preparation to seek or obtain employment.
Job Skills Training Directly Related to Employment
Training or education for job skills required by an employer to provide an individual with the ability to obtain employment or to advance or adapt to the changing demands of the workplace.
Employment Services | Terms Definitions | K - Z
On the Job Training
Training in the public or private sector that is given to a paid employee while he or she is engaged in productive work, and that provides knowledge and skills essential to the full and adequate performance of the job.
Sensitive Support Service
Activities required to assist the participant in achieving job readiness but are sensitive/confidential in nature such as DCF involvement or Domestic Violence Counseling Services.
Subsidized Employment
The employer receives a subsidy from federal or other public funds to pay for some or all of the wages and costs of employing an individual. Subsidized employment provides workers with valuable job-readiness skills and professional experience that can be useful towards attaining unsubsidized employment.
Unsubsidized Employment
Full- or part-time employment in the public or private sector that is not subsidized by TANF or any other public program.
Vocational Education
Organized educational programs that are directly related to the preparation of individuals for employment in current or emerging occupations.
