About the DNA Project
The DNA Project is a specialized unit of the Connecticut Division of Public Defender Services. We provide assistance, training, and resources to Connecticut public defenders and assigned counsel who are working on criminal cases that involve DNA evidence. We are available to assist defense attorneys on any and all aspects of a DNA case, from obtaining discovery to interpreting a DNA report to hiring an expert to preparing for trial. We also put on trainings and seminars for public defenders and assigned counsel.
The DNA Project is coordinated by Senior Assistant Public Defender Joseph Lopez.
Contact the DNA Project
OCPD policy requires all public defenders who are handling a class A or B felony case that involves DNA evidence to consult with the DNA Project. Upon learning that your A or B felony case contains DNA evidence, please complete and submit our intake form. This policy encompasses cases commencing after March 1, 2016.
Public defenders and assigned counsel in all other cases involving DNA evidence are encouraged (but not required) to consult with the DNA Project. Please complete and submit our intake form.
Connecticut public defenders and assigned counsel are also welcome to contact the DNA Project with DNA-related questions that are not specific to a case. You can reach us at 860-258-4940 or joseph.lopez@jud.ct.gov.
