Pre-employment transition services for students who are blind

BESB Pre-Employment Transition Services (PreETS) provides pre-employment services to students ages 16 to 22.  These programs support students with disabilities as they transition from school to higher education or the workforce. The goal is to help students with skills and knowledge for successful employment.

Who is eligible for PreETS services?
  • Students Aged 16-22
  • Students attending secondary or post-secondary school
  • Must be legally blind or visually impaired  
  • Have either an IEP or 504 Plan
Some of the services offered:
  • Career exploration. This includes counseling, labor market information and identifying career pathways that interest the student.
  • Work-based learning experiences. These include job training, job shadowing, mentoring, short-term employment and paid/unpaid internships.
  • Post-secondary education counseling. This includes information about course offerings, types of academic or occupational training needed for careers, information on college applications and admissions and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. 
  • Workplace readiness skills. These help students develop social and independent living skills needed for employment.
  • Information on self-advocacy. This can include mentoring and peer mentoring, participating in youth leadership activities and volunteer opportunities. 
  • Orientation and mobility training
