  Acting in response to a motion filed Tuesday by the Attorney General and the Consumer Counsel, the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) has ruled that Northeast Utilities and NStar “must demonstrate that the proposed merger is in the public interest in order to gain PURA approval.”

• Attorney General, Consumer Protection Commissioner: Abnormal Market Disruption on Energy Products through Nov. 10

  Due to Hurricane Sandy’s continuing potential to affect fuel distribution and sale in Connecticut, Attorney General George Jepsen announced that he will issue a notice of abnormal market disruption that will commence when the existing abnormal market period ends on Nov. 3. Department of Consumer Protection Commissioner William M. Rubenstein today encouraged consumers to help minimize stress on the markets by conserving gasoline where possible.

• Attorney General, Consumer Counsel: Merger, Settlement Agreement Win Approval

  Connecticut consumers were ensured benefits from the proposed merger of Northeast Utilities and Boston-based NSTAR by the final approval today of the merger and a Connecticut settlement agreement negotiated by Attorney General George Jepsen and Consumer Counsel Elin Swanson Katz.

• Agreement Reached With Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. Over Release of Some Customers’ Personally Identifiable Information

  Attorney General George Jepsen and Consumer Protection Commissioner William Rubenstein have reached an agreement with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. to provide additional protections to the current and former customers whose personal information was made public.

• ADVISORY: Triad Conference Scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1, Postponed

  The annual Connecticut Triad conference, “No Excuse for Financial Abuse,” scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Riverfront Community Center, 300 Welles Street, Glastonbury, is cancelled for weather-related reasons. It will be rescheduled at a later date.

• AG, DEEP Take Action against Suspected Illegal Discharge Of Wastewater by Car Wash in Old Saybrook

  Attorney General George Jepsen and Energy and Environmental Protection Commissioner Daniel C. Esty have taken action to block a commercial car wash in Old Saybrook from discharging wastewater in violation of its permit and state environmental laws.

  Attorney General George Jepsen again urged U.S. Senate leaders to reject proposed federal legislation that would undermine Connecticut’s gun-permitting laws by requiring the state to recognize out-of-state permits, including concealed carry permits.
