Why is OSTA needed?

OSTA is responsible for ensuring the signs, markings, and traffic signals (traffic control devices) for the driving laws in Connecticut meet National standards.

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) sets the National standards for all traffic control devices. This means that drivers traveling from state to state will see the same messages along all highways, streets, and bikeways which reduces driver confusion and makes the roads safer for all users.

OSTA uses the Federal Highway Administration's Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as part of its practices to establish a uniform system of traffic control devices in Connecticut.
