Newington, Connecticut – The Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) is announcing that work on the steel repairs to the existing Interstate 95 Pearl Harbor Memorial Bridge in New Haven have begun.

Commissioner Joseph Marie signed an Emergency Declaration on July 18, 2008 stating that, based on a recent inspection of the bridge, steel members that are deteriorated would be given immediate attention.

Based on that inspection, structural steel will be cleaned, plated and strengthened where required.  In addition, temporary supports will be provided to support the steel and bridge decks adjacent to deteriorated pier caps.

The contract is valued at approximately $943,000 and the work will be performed by a joint venture between Cianbro from Pittsfield, Maine and Middlesex Corporation from Littleton, Massachusetts.

It is anticipated that no impacts to motorists will occur since access and repairs will be completed from the underside of the structure.  Construction is scheduled to be completed on or about December 1, 2008.
