Public information Meeting Regarding rehabilitation of the I-84 Eastbound Ramp (Flyover) to I-91 in Hartford
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will conduct a Public Information Meeting concerning the rehabilitation of Bridge No. 05868, which carries an I-84 EB Ramp (Flyover) to I-91 NB over I-84/I-91 Ramps and CSO Railroad, in the city of Hartford. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 8, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. in the Multi Purpose Room of Union Station, 1 Union Place, Hartford, CT. Inclement weather date will be Wednesday, December 15, 2010.
The existing bridge is a nine-span 1726-foot long bridge comprised of three–three span continuous steel box girders composite with a reinforced concrete deck on cast-in-place concrete piers and abutments. The bridge width varies from 32’-5” to 33’-10” which allows for a single travel lane that varies from 12’-7” to 14’-0”, a 10-foot right shoulder, a 6-foot left shoulder, and two 1’-11” wide concrete parapets. There is a single-rail metal bridge rail mounted on top of each parapet. The bridge is in need of rehabilitation due to the Pier 2 pier cap condition rating of "poor," and the deteriorated condition of the existing modular bridge deck joints.
The proposed project consists of replacing the four modular bridge deck joints and strengthening the pier cap at Pier 2 by utilizing fiber reinforced polymer bonding on the external surface of the pier cap.
Work is anticipated to begin in the spring of 2012 and be completed in the summer of 2012. The rehabilitation of this bridge is to be undertaken with federal and state funds. The estimated construction cost for this project is approximately $600,000. There will be no rights-of-way involvement associated with this project. The construction associated with joint replacement will be performed in two stages utilizing temporary precast concrete barrier curb, and will maintain approximately one half of the ramp’s width for traffic in each stage. The construction associated with strengthening the pier cap will be accomplished during off-peak hours utilizing a temporary traffic pattern.
The Public Information Meeting is being held to afford a full opportunity for public participation and to allow open discussion of any views and comments the community may have concerning this proposed project.
