Resurfacing Project on Interstate 95 between Exits 63 and 69 in the Towns of Guilford, Madison, Clinton, Westbrook and Old Saybrook
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that work has started for the milling and resurfacing of Interstate 95 from Interchange 58 (Route 77) in Guilford to the Baldwin Bridge carrying I-95 over the Connecticut River at Interchange 69 (Route 9) in Old Saybrook for a total distance of 17.8 miles.  The contractor is scheduled to be working seven nights a week on this project.

The project is one of several projects in the Department’s Pavement Preservation Program and is also being funded in part by the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) new Highways for LIFE program (HfL).

The project will have two different resurfacing treatments applied in three different sections.

Section I: I-95 north and south from the vicinity of Interchange 58 (Route 77) in Guilford to Interchange 65 (Route 153) in Westbrook, a total distance of 12.49 miles.

This section will have three (3) inches of pavement milled off and replaced with three (3) inches of new pavement.  The new pavement will be composed of a Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology bituminous concrete mixture using a polymer modified binder. The mix will provide improved durability/rut resistance on the high volume road, which will achieve the HfL performance goal of enhancing quality. An area within the section will also have a pilot innovative technique using the Safety Edge to help reduce roadway departure crashes which will achieve the HfL performance goal of enhancing safety.

Section II: I-95 north and south from the vicinity of Interchange 65 (Route 153) in Westbrook to Interchange 68 (U.S. 1 /Springbrook Road) in Old Saybrook, a total distance of 4.59 miles.

This section will be resurfaced with a 5/8" ultra-thin bonded overlay within the travel lanes (rumble strip to rumble strip).

Section III: A third section from Interchange 68 to the Baldwin Bridge carrying I-95 over the Connecticut River at Interchange 69 (Route 9) in Old Saybrook, a total distance of 0.72 miles.

This section will have the same treatment as Section I, three inch mill and fill with a Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology bituminous concrete mixture using a polymer modified binder.

DOT Project No. 0154-0122 was awarded to American Industries of Jewett City, Connecticut on June 29, 2012 at a cost of $18,175,000.00 and is scheduled to be completed in July 2013.

The current schedule has the contractor working between Interchange 63 (Route 81) in Clinton to Interchange 69 (Route 9) in Old Saybrook for 2012.  Work from Interchange 58 (Route 77) in Guilford to Interchange 63 (route 81) in Clinton will begin in 2013.
