Daytime Construction Activity on Route 2 Resurfacing and Safety Improvement Project in Glastonbury Scheduled for November

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that additional day time activities will start on Route 2 between exits 8 and 11 in the town of Glastonbury on Monday, November 4, 2013.

Daytime work will begin on Route 2 from November 4 to November 26, 2013 in order to complete repairs to the existing shoulders prior to winter.  The shoulders are in poor condition, and for the safety of the traveling public, it was determined to mill and pave the shoulders when the temperatures are warmer, resulting in a better quality pavement.

The project involves resurfacing and safety improvements of approximately 4.6 miles of Route 2 westbound and eastbound lanes including bridges and on/off ramps in Glastonbury. As part of the resurfacing, the technique of rubblization will be used throughout this area. Rubblization is a means of rehabilitating deteriorated Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement substructure. The concrete is broken into pieces utilizing specialized machinery, and then it is overlaid with Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA).

Also included in this project is the repair and resurfacing of eight bridges within the project limits, placement of edge drains, and metal beam rail will be updated to current standards.

The project limits are from approximately 300 feet east of the Commerce Street Bridge located between Exits 8 and 9, and to approximately 400 feet east of the Wassuc Road Bridge located between exits 10 and 11.

DOT Project No. 0053-0186 was awarded to Tilcon Connecticut Inc. of New Britain, CT on August 26, 2013 at a cost of $21,796,099.41 and is scheduled to be completed in June 2015.
