Project No. 0102-0325 , Route 1 Intersection Improvements at Route 53 and East Avenue, City of Norwalk
The Connecticut Department of Transportation's (Department) Office of Engineering is developing plans to provide an exclusive left-turn lane on northbound U.S. Route 1 at its intersection with Route 53 in the City of Norwalk. The purpose of the project is to provide safety and traffic operational improvements at this intersection.
The project involves widening
on the north side of U.S. Route 1 to avoid impacts
to the cemetery
located on the southwest quadrant of the intersection. The northbound U.S. Route 1 approach
to the intersection would include an exclusive left-turn lane and two through lanes while the southbound approach would include an exclusive left-turn lane and one through lane. Utility relocation and minor drainage
adjustments will be required
to accommodate the proposed roadway footprint.
The present
schedule indicates that the design will be completed
in October 2014 , with construction anticipated to start in spring 2015. This project will be undertaken with 80 % Federal and 20 % State funds.
It is the Department's policy to keep the public
informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important
that the community share its concerns
with us to assist
in the project's development. A public informational meeting
will be conducted upon the completion of the preliminary design. At this time,
it is not anticipated that a formal public hearing will be necessary.
