The Connecticut Department of Transportation (Department) will conduct a Public Information Meeting concerning the rehabilitation of bridge numbers 02135 and 02138 in Greenwich.  The meeting will take place on Tuesday, November 19, 2013, at the Greenwich Town Hall, Cone Conference Room, 101 Field Point Road, Greenwich, beginning at 7:00 PM.

The existing bridge consists of a single-span concrete deck slab supported on concrete abutments, endwalls and wingwalls. The bridge supports Route 15 over Converse Pond Brook in the town of Greenwich and is located approximately 100-feet north of Exit 28.

Route 15 NB carries two travel lanes. Route 15 SB carries two travel lanes and a parallel deceleration lane. The existing roadway width of the bridge is 80-feet. The northbound and southbound travel lanes are separated by a 21-foot wide grass median. The estimated 2012 Average Daily Traffic on Route 15 at this site is 49,900 vehicles per day.

The purpose and need for the project is to address the bridge’s structural deficiencies. The bridge is structurally deficient due to the poor condition of the outlet endwall and the outlet wingwalls. The bridge is also hydraulically inadequate.

The Route 15 NB shoulder will have approximately 80-feet of full depth roadway construction due to the reconstruction of the existing headwall and wingwalls.

The reconstruction of the endwalls, wingwalls, and the increase in length of the Exit 28 off-ramp will result in approximately 450-feet of full depth roadway construction along Route 15 SB.

The proposed lane and shoulder configurations of Route 15 will match the existing roadway layout.

The bridge rehabilitation will be constructed in two stages with the existing travel lanes on Route 15 being maintained at all times during construction. Temporary access roads will be constructed off the Route 15 NB and SB right shoulders to provide access and egress to the culvert inlet and outlet.

Work is anticipated to begin in summer 2015. The rehabilitation of this bridge is to be undertaken with Federal and State funds.

The existing bridge consists of a single cell, cast-in-place concrete culvert and concrete endwalls and wingwalls. The culvert supports Route 15 over Horseneck Brook in the town of Greenwich and is located approximately 0.4-miles west of the North Street overpass.

The culvert carries two lanes in each direction. The existing roadway width of the culvert is 87-feet. The northbound and southbound travel lanes are separated by a 20-foot wide grass median. The estimated 2012 Average Daily Traffic on Route 15 at this site is 51,600 vehicles per day.

The purpose and need for the project is to address the culvert’s structural deficiencies. The culvert is structurally deficient due to the poor condition of the culvert barrel walls and soffit. The culvert is also hydraulically inadequate.

The proposed bridge rehabilitation will result in minimal roadway construction since most of the work will be performed off of Route 15. Temporary access roads will be constructed to allow the contractor access and egress from the culvert inlet and outlet.

The proposed bridge rehabilitation will be constructed with the existing travel lanes on Route 15 being maintained at all times during construction.

Work is anticipated to begin in summer 2015. The rehabilitation of this culvert is to be undertaken with Federal and State funds.
