The project is necessary to make improvements to the carrying capacity and road width as well as increasing the bridge opening in the waterway to minimize scour, improve water flow within the brook and reduce the potential for flooding over the roadway.
The bridge work includes the replacement of the structure with a reinforced concrete deck on galvanized steel beams supported on concrete abutments on steel piles. The bridge span is being increased from 24 feet to 60 feet. The bridge is currently 25 feet wide and will be increased to 30 feet wide to accommodate a 12 foot lane and 3 foot shoulder in each direction.
Road work includes a bituminous concrete overlay at the site, the installation of metal beam railing at the approaches to the bridge, construction of retaining walls, and minor drainage improvements.
DOT Project No. 0070-0116 was awarded to McCarthy Concrete, Incorporated of South Windsor, Connecticut at a cost of $1,603,715.25 on March 12, 2013, and is scheduled to be completed in November 2013.
