Rehabilitation of Route 34 Bridge over Naugatuck River in Derby
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that work for the second stage of construction is scheduled to begin Monday, August 25, 2014, for the rehabilitation of Main Street (Route 34) bridge over the Naugatuck River in the town of Derby. Westbound Route 34 lanes will be shifted south, to the center of the bridge, while the northern portion of the bridge is being reconstructed. This lane configuration is expected to be in place until the Spring of 2015.
The project consists of the rehabilitation of the full length of the bridge including replacement of the concrete deck, replacement of bridge bearings, sidewalk and lighting. New fascia girders for a new sidewalk will also be installed. Bituminous pavement will be installed after the deck repairs.
The stage construction on Route 34 westbound requires the existing sidewalk to be closed with a temporary pedestrian walkway being established and the existing two lanes of traffic across the bridge to be shifted to the existing left lane and newly constructed median. This is the second of four stages of construction to complete the bridge replacement. This is Bridge Number 00947.
Traffic Condition Advisory
During this stage traffic traveling on Route 34 eastbound must use right lane only. The left lane of eastbound will be a dedicated turn lane for Route 115 North.
LANE CLOSURE INFO
Work to set the barrier and pavement markings for the first stage will begin at 8:00 p.m. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained at all times during this operation
The contractor will be allowed to detour traffic during six occasions on week nights between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The dates of the detour will be provided two weeks in advance of closure.
DOT Project No. 0036-0182 was awarded to Baier Construction Co., at a cost of $8,865,000.50 on 03/14/14 and is scheduled to be completed in November 2016.
