Sikorsky Airport Improvements, Realignment of Route 113
And Construction of Runway Safety Area
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that the Sikorsky Airport Improvements, Realignment of Route 113 and Construction of Runway Safety Area project in the towns of Bridgeport and Stratford will begin in the week of August 4, 2014.
The project is located within the coastal Special Flood Hazard Area of Long Island Sound. The project consists of excavation and removal from the site all hazardous material identified as “Raymark Waste”, improvements to Runway Safety Area adjacent to Runway 24, construction of an Engineered Materials Arrestor System to replace the existing concrete blast fence adjacent to Runway 24, the rehabilitation of existing Runway 6-24 and various drainage improvements associated with runway improvements at the Sikorsky Memorial Airport, a limited relocation of State Route 113 and various mitigation activities for wildlife habitat and wetlands impacts.

Limited periods of complete closure of Route 113 with detours will be necessary and will be announced in the near future via a separate press release.
Traffic control personnel and signing patterns will be utilized to guide motorists through the work zone. The regular work schedule for this project is from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Monday thru Friday).
Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Motorists are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this vicinity.

DOT Project No. 15-336 was awarded to Manafort Brothers Inc. of Plainville, CT on June 20, 2014 for $17,694,892.21 with an official start date of July 05, 2014 and an anticipated completion date of April 30, 2016.
