The Connecticut Department of Transportation is developing plans for resurfacing, bridge and safety improvements on I-91 in Wethersfield and Hartford. The purpose of the project is to rehabilitate the underlying concrete slabs which are exhibiting signs of distress, to perform routine maintenance on the various bridges, and to upgrade the roadside appurtenances.

The proposed improvements include rehabilitating the concrete pavement on I-91, including southbound and northbound directions as well as the ramps.  There are five structures which carry I-91 that will require deck rehabilitation and parapet modifications.  Upgrades will be made to the roadside appurtenances to meet the current design standards.

The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in November 2017, with construction anticipated to start in the spring of 2018, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits.  This project will be undertaken with 90% federal and 10% state funds.

It is the Department's policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken.  It is important that the community share its concerns with us to assist in the project's development.  If there is adequate interest, a public informational meeting will be conducted upon the completion of the preliminary design.  At this time, it is not anticipated that a formal public hearing will be necessary.
