Modern Roundabout Proposal for the Northerly and Southerly Convergence of Route 82 and Route 154 in Haddam
The Connecticut Department of Transportation’s (Department) Office of Engineering is developing plans to replace the T-type intersections, at the northerly and southerly convergence of Route 82 and Route 154, with modern roundabouts in the Town of Haddam.
The purpose of this project is to improve safety and reduce congestion. Two modern roundabouts are proposed to replace the existing T-type intersections. The “northern intersection” included in this project is that of Saybrook Road (RT 82/154) and Bridge Road (RT 82). The “southern intersection” included in this project is that of Saybrook Road (RT 82/154) and The Route 9 Connector (RT 82). The approach geometry of the intersections will be modified to as required. Raised splitter islands will be constructed to channelize traffic and gradually reduce speeds as vehicles approach the intersections. Work within the circle of the roundabouts will include the construction of a concrete truck apron and a landscaped central island. The structurally deficient Bridge No. 00622 carrying Saybrook Road over Roaring Brook will also be replaced as part of the project.
The present schedule indicates that the design will be completed in September 2020, with construction anticipated to start in spring 2021, assuming acceptance of the project, availability of funding, and receipt of any required right-of-way and environmental permits. This project will be undertaken with eighty percent (80%) Federal and twenty percent (20%) State funds.
It is the Department's policy to keep the public informed and involved when such projects are undertaken. It is important that the community share its concerns with the Department to assist in the project's development. The Department expects to hold a public informational meeting upon the completion of the preliminary design.
