Moses Wheeler Breakout Project in Milford / Stratford
The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that construction activities related to the Moses Wheeler Breakout Project are commencing May 21, 2018. The work includes creation of new tidal wetland habitat on both sides of the Housatonic River, and construction of a new boat launch and parking lot.
The project includes the demolition of the existing steel trestles on each side of the Housatonic River used to reconstruct the Moses Wheeler Bridge (Project 138-221), excavation of tidal wetland areas on each side, removal of invasive plant species, planting of native species, and construction of a new boat launch ramp on the Milford side of the river.
In addition, there will be access road improvements on either side of the river, and construction of a new parking area for the boat launch on the Milford side. No roadway closures are expected to take place. No Housatonic River navigational closures are expected for the demolition of the existing trestle system on either side.
DOT Project no. 0138-0249 was awarded to Waters Construction Company, Inc. at a cost of $7,414,708.50 on March 27, 2018, and is scheduled to be completed on May 19, 2019.
The contractor will work Monday through Friday, 7 am to 3:30 pm. There will be no detours for traffic, and access will be maintained for both vehicles and pedestrians through the work zones. Local business access will be maintained at all times and marked with additional signage as necessary to direct customers.
