Reconstruction of Route 349 Northbound and Southbound over AMTRAK Railroad Bridge in Groton to Begin

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is announcing that reconstruction of the Route 349 NB and SB bridges over Amtrak in Groton will begin on April 1, 2018.

The project consists of repairing the existing substructure and removing and replacing most of the superstructure for Bridge #03330 (Rte. 349 SB) and Bridge #03331 (Rte. 349 NB) over AMTRAK.  The project includes 2 stages for each bridge and will consist of removing and replacing half of each bridge at a time.  The southbound approach will commence first, with the northbound approach following shortly afterwards. The on-ramp for Route 349 SB from Bridge Street will be closed throughout the Route 349 SB construction.  There will be detour routes marked with orange signs marked on adjacent streets to detour traffic around the northern corridor of Route 349 and ending/starting at Meridian Street.
DOT Project No. 0058-0332 was awarded to ROTHA Contracting Company, Inc. at a cost of $6,709,524.90 on 11/28/2017 and is scheduled to be completed 11/25/2019.
LANE CLOSURE & DETOUR INFO
The Route 349 SB bridge will be started first. The low speed lane will be closed first and traffic will flow through the high speed lane.  Route 349 NB will follow shortly after the start of the SB bridge, but will be closing down the high speed lane and traffic will flow through the low speed lane.  Stage 2 will consist of opening the completed sections as described and closing down the opposite lanes.
The on-ramp to Route 348 SB from Bridge Street will be closed for the duration of the Route 349 SB bridge construction.  Further details on the detour will be provided in a future press release.
