Drivers on Route 6 (Boston Post Road) will see a new style of red indications at exclusive left-turn lanes at three intersections in Windham later this year.
The new red indications are for left-turning traffic from Route 6 at the intersections with Airport Road/Willi Bowl, Northridge Drive (Wal*Mart) and the new Home Depot drive. Drivers turning left will see red arrow indications in place of circular red signals. This change is in accordance with the national trend toward the use of such displays in traffic signals, and is intended to make it easier for drivers to know what to do when making left turns.
Drivers seeing a solid red arrow must stop and wait until it changes to a solid green arrow. A flashing red arrow should be treated as a flashing circular red and drivers should stop and then proceed with caution yielding to both pedestrians and conflicting traffic.
The DOT will be monitoring drivers reactions to the red arrows here and at several others “pilot” locations with an eye toward more widespread use of the concept.
