New Speed Change Lane Open
I-95 Interchanges 10 and 11 in Darien, CT

Darien, Connecticut – The Connecticut Department of Transportation announced today the new speed-change lanes on I-95 between Interchanges 10 and 11 opened today, Friday December 21, 2007.

Interstate 95 in Fairfield County has been identified as one of the most congested corridors in Connecticut and therefore a high priority for improvement.  A speed-change lane is a continuous auxiliary lane between closely-spaced entrance and exit ramps. It is a congestion mitigation measure that provides additional length for the acceleration or deceleration of vehicles entering or leaving the highway thereby aiding in operational efficiency and safety.

This project was awarded to Waters Construction Company Inc. on July 26, 2006, at a cost of $5.5 million.

Another project scheduled to begin in late Spring of 2008 will be for the construction of three additional speed-change lanes at the following locations:

  • I-95 north in Darien from Interchange 11 on ramp to Interchange 12 off ramp
  • I-95 south in Darien from Interchange 12 on ramp to Interchange 11 off ramp
  • I-95 north in Norwalk from Interchange 13 on ramp to Interchange 13 off ramp
