“These new systems will ensure convenient and reliable service on what is the oldest continually operated ferry in the country,” said James P. Redeker, Commissioner of the Connecticut Department of Transportation, which oversees ferry operations.
Normally, the ferry operates from May 1 to October 31 each year, but this year’s start date was briefly delayed until the new systems could be checked out. Over the winter maintenance period, the tug Cumberland, which powers the vehicle barge Hollister III across the river, was refitted with a new Tier II environmentally compliant power system.
On weekdays, the ferry will run from 7 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. On weekends, the schedule is 10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The other Connecticut River ferry, between Chester and Hadlyme, operates from April 1 to November 30 each year. A new power system was also installed on that ferry over the winter.
