Challenges
Some of the challenges that will need to be addressed in the realization of a Merritt Parkway Trail are:
-
Cost (includes design, purchase of additional property if needed, and construction)
-
Maintenance of trail surface, vegetation, and other elements
-
Multiple watercourses and wetlands that would need to be crossed and required permitting
-
Maintaining the existing character of neighborhoods along the corridor
-
Preserving the setting of the existing historic landscape
-
Meeting the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
-
Preserving the integrity of bridge architecture
-
Providing safe crossings at intersecting roads - Accommodating parking and other services for visitors
-
Ensuring the safety of all users and accommodating emergency response access
This is not intended to be an all-inclusive list and additional challenges are expected to be brought up during the public involvement process.
