Project Development Unit
The Project Development Unit is responsible for developing, reviewing and refining project concepts for transportation improvements to a level of detail sufficient for project prioritization and initiation. This includes defining prudent and feasible solutions that satisfy the purpose and need of the project, identifying project constraints and complexities, and estimating associated costs and impacts to various resources prior to project initiation.
Project scopes are developed based on improvement needs identified by other offices within the Department, and by municipalities in conjunction with their regional planning organizations (RPO). The development and evaluation of feasible alternatives is coordinated with those organizations, FHWA, other Department disciplines as warranted, and with the public and other stakeholders within the local communities.
The Project Development Unit also provides technical assistance on corridor studies and other special studies.
